LEARNING DEVELOPMENT
At KLDC Sixth we want to ensure that all our students receive the necessary support to thrive in our environment. Whether for an additional learning need or mental health, we acknowledge that we all require a little extra help at times.
Students with needs are well catered for at KLDC Sixth. Our Head of Learning Development, Michelle Kennedy, is a highly qualified SENDCo with many years’ experience of working in schools.

“After a while you learn the subtle difference between holding a hand and chaining a soul”, these words written by Jorge Luis Borges in his poem entitled After a While perfectly encapsulates a teacher’s role within the educational system. In my 24 years of experience of working as a teacher I have learnt that not only is it important to strive for excellence, standards and equal opportunities, it is also important to give young people the tools in which to do this themselves, beyond the classroom and into the future.
My role as a specialist teacher has afforded me a unique insight into how to motivate individuals. I have been fortunate to have a wide range of experience procured from teaching in a diverse set of schools including special needs schools, inner city London schools and more recently within a highly selective private school. I therefore feel confident in my ability to facilitate progression and enthusiasm for learning.
Throughout my career I have worked with a mixture of additional learning needs including SpLD, Physically Disabled, Hearing and Visually Impaired. In particular, I have found myself especially drawn to developing my understanding of ASD and AD(H)D. This passion first began in my early years as a teacher during this time, I worked closely with an educational psychologist and a speech and language therapist to deliver a Social Use of Language Program created by Dr Wendy Rinaldi to a selection of young students. Its success was obvious after the first year, helping students make sense of their emotions and reducing anxiety and conflict. Due to this positive and challenging experience I looked to expand my understanding of this intervention and with the implementation of Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning I was able to continue with this work both as a teacher and as an educational consultant.
I want to ensure that all KLDC Sixth students are enabled to access the tools by which they can use to succeed now and into the future. If you have additional learning needs and would like to find out more about our support, please email office@kldc6th.com."
